On August 31, 2010, at approximately 5:00 pm, Salinas Police officers responded to a victim of a shooting in the apartment complex of 2073 Santa Rita Ave. (The Boronda Manor). In one of the apartments officers found a 6-year-old child suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The child was transported to a local hospital and then flown to a bay area hospital by medical helicopter.

The shooting appears to be accidental. The 6 year-old victim and his 12 year-old brother were the only people in the apartment at the time of the shooting. How the shooting occurred and the location of the parents at the time of the shooting is still under investigation. The firearm did come from the residence and belonged to the parents.

At the time of this writing, the 6 year-old victim had survived surgery but is listed in critical condition with life threatening injuries. No one has been arrested at this time and the investigation is continuing.
