Release Date/Time: 12/19/2009 7:03 PM Officers received several calls of shots fired coming from the area of Closter Park. The calls came during a time when a candle light vigil for peace was being held at the park. Witnesses at the vigil reported hearing 8-10 shots. Responding officers were not able to locate a victim, but located an abandoned bicycle and evidence that a shooting had taken place near the park. Soon thereafter, a Salinas hospital reported that the 21 year old victim had arrived at the Emergency Room with gunshot wounds. The investigation revealed that the victim was riding his bike on Towt St when a newer model Nissan 4 door vehicle drove by him and fired several rounds at him. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his lower torso and ran away from the area on foot. The victim was eventually transported to the hospital by private vehicle where at the time of this press release he was being treated and was expected to survive. The suspect vehicle was last seen fleeing southbound on Towt St and then eastbound on Acosta St. It is unknown whether the incident is gang related. Release Authorized by: Terry Gerhardstein |
