Salinas Police Department

On 6-10-09 at approximately 2225 hours, a Salinas Police Officer attempted to contact two suspicious occupants of a vehicle in the parking lot of the Longs Drug Store, located in the 300 block of E. Alisal St. The driver Abraham Ramirez, 27 and passenger Gabriel Zapata, 37 fled at a high rate of speed when the officer approached. A vehicle pursuit ensued and when Ramirez turned onto Peach St. from E. Market St., he fired several shots from a handgun at the police officer and his vehicle. The chase continued and in the area of W. Rossi St. and Victor St., Ramirez lost control of his vehicle and collided with a full size pickup truck (Neither of the occupants were injured). The suspect vehicle bounced off the pick up and came to rest with the drivers door facing the officers oncoming patrol car. Ramirez began to exit the vehicle with his hands concealed and the officer used the front of his patrol car to pin Ramirez in the doorway of the suspect vehicle. Ramirez was taken into custody, as was Zapata who fled after the accident. Both were treated and released for their injuries and booked for various charges to include attempted murder of a police officer. The officer was not injured, nor did he discharge his firearm. He is placed on routine administrative leave and his name is not being released at this time since this is an active investigation.
