Salinas Police Officers saw a Toyota Avalon driving on Kern Street and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at the Shell gas station at E. Market and Kern Street for a traffic violation. Omero Venegas, 35, a gang member, was the driver and sole occupant of the car. He began exiting the car and refused to follow the officers' instructions. Venegas then ran eastbound towards Kings Street. After jumping several fences he was caught on N. Madiera Avenue. Venegas again refused the officers' commands to surrender and started to put his hands in his pockets. The officer deployed his taser striking Venegas in the upper torso. Venegas continued to resist and eventually was taken into custody. Once officers searched the vehicle. a loaded .40 caliber Glock handgun was located. The handgun was stolen during a December 2009 residential burglary in the City of Salinas. Venegas was booked and lodged at the Monterey County Jail for several gun charges, resisting arrest, and gang enhancements.
