Joint Press Release Salinas Police & Salinas Fire Departments

 SALINAS POLICE DEPARTMENT
SALINAS FIRE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
July 1, 2008

The Salinas Police Department and Salinas Fire Department will be working jointly during the 4th of July holiday to enforce firework violations. The City Police and Fire Departments encourage everyone to voluntarily turn in their fireworks this year. The public can turn in their fireworks to any police or fire department officer without worrying about arrest or citations. The City will work with the State Fire Marshals Office to dispose of the fireworks.

It is a violation of the City of Salinas Municipal Code 21-18 to sell, possess, or discharge fireworks. Any person violating this section may be cited or arrested. The maximum penalty for those individuals violating this misdemeanor section is a $1,000.00 fine and/or one year in county jail.

In addition, the City of Salinas Municipal Code, Fire Prevention Chapter 13-9 Fire Code Section 3308.11 reads as follows - Retail display and sale of fireworks is prohibited in the City of Salinas. Consumer fireworks shall not be sold, given, possessed or used within the City of Salinas.

Other persons found selling, giving, possessing, or using any dangerous or safe and sane fireworks may be cited or arrested. Next year, the costs of fireworks disposal will also be added to the citation process.

From 2002 to 2008, the City of Salinas has experienced 75 fireworks related incidents, with $245,000 in damages. Hospitals voluntarily report fireworks related injuries, so injury data is inaccurate and absent.

If you have any further questions, contact Salinas Police Department Commander Terry Heffington or the on-duty Watch Commander at (831) 758-7250. You may also contact Salinas Fire Department Fire Marshal Mark Latham, at (831) 758-7261.
