On 12-1-09, a staff member at Harden Middle School found a backpack in the quad area left unattended. When they picked the bag up they noted an odor of marijuana coming from the bag. They notified a school resource officer who inspected the bag. He found a baggie containing loose marijuana along with a smoking pipe in the backpack.

School staff reviewed the video cameras and found that Harry Williams, 70, a substitute teacher, had set the bag down when he sat on a bench. When he got up to leave he forgot to pick up his pack.

Williams was questioned and admitted the marijuana belonged to him. He said he had a note from his doctor allowing him to have the drug for medical reasons. He said he forgot it was in his bag when he came to school. Williams was cited for possession of marijuana on school grounds. School staff sent him home after this incident.
