Sobriety and driver's license checkpoints for the Memorial Day Holiday weekend
Release Date/Time: 5/26/2011 12:16 PM The Salinas Police Department will conduct two checkpoints focusing on sobriety and drivers license during the upcoming holiday weekend as part of the Memorial day holiday at undisclosed locations in the city of Salinas. The first of the two checkpoints will occur on Friday the 27th and the second will be on Monday the 30th. Traffic flowing through the checkpoint will be contacted by uniformed officers, who will be checking for alcohol and or drug-impaired drivers. Officer will also check to make sure all drivers have a valid driver's license. The chekcpoint scheduled for the 30th will be targeting alcohol or drug impaired driver's only and driver's licenses will not be requested from the driver's contacted. The purpose of these checkpoints is to promote public safety; increase awareness of the dangers associated with driking and driving, and to serve as a deterrent to potential impaired and unlicensed drivers. Approximately four hours prior to the implementation of the checkpoint, there will be an additional press release specifying the general area of the checkpoint and approximate duration of the operation. Both checkpoints are part of the Monterey County "Avoid the 18" coalition, of which Salinas PD is the host agency. Funding for these checkpoints is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
