Press Releases

The Safe Teens Empowerment Project in Salinas (S.T.E.P.S.), a program of Sun Street Centers, in collaboration with the Salinas Police Department, will be conducting it's 7th Annual Turkey & DUI Checkpoint during the evening hours of Tuesday November 24, 2009, at an undisclosed location in the city of Salinas. This checkpoint is purposely conducted during the Thanksgiving celebration period in an attempt to reduce the amount of drinking and driving associated with Thanksgiving celebrations and to provide a turkey to those families in need of one during this time of the year. Drivers who successfully pass through the DUI checkpoint may be given a turkey that has been donated by businesses, private persons, and members of the Salinas Police Department. The Salinas Police Department respectfully asks the public, in the interest of traffic congestion and holiday goodwill, that drivers refrain from repeatedly going through the checkpoint in an attempt to get one or more of the limited number of turkeys. If you are interested in donating cash or a turkey, you may call Lory Carriedo, the S.T.E.P.S Coordinator at 753-5150. If you have any questions regarding the checkpoint, you may contact Sergeant Terry Gerhardstein of the Salinas Police Department at (831) 758-7224.
