Incident: Undeliverable Package Scam
Date: Monday, 12/10/2012
Time: 1:58 PM
Location:Salinas

The Salinas Police Department has become aware of a scam involving someone posing as a Fed Ex employee over the phone.

The unsuspecting victim is told a package was not delivered at their home because no one was home. The caller also states that the package will not be delivered unless a “holding fee” is paid and this fee increases each day the package is undeliverable. The victim is also threatened that if the fee is not paid, Fed Ex will notify the police and that the victim can be held for 48 hours. The victim is provided with a bank account number as to where the fee is to be paid.

The phone number and the business associated with this scam is SOLUCIONES LEGALES or Legal Solutions in Spanish out of New York State. The business is fictitious and the money deposited into the bank account is immediately withdrawn. The scam appears to target Spanish speaking victims.

Fed Ex confirmed that this type of incident is completely fraudulent and not their standard procedure. The alleged Fed Ex employee does not exist either.

With the holiday season here and an increase in packages being delivered, everyone should be cautious of scams like this. Any suspicious activity such as this should be reported to the police.
