Homicide
Release Date/Time: 4/6/2012 4:51 AM On April 5, 2012, at approximately 11:40 PM, Salinas Police officers responded to a report of a shooting and man down at the intersection of Alma Ave. and Second Ave. When officers arrived they found 26 year-old Santiago Ramirez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Ramirez was transported to Natividad Medical Center and was pronounced dead a short time later. Witnesses stated Ramirez was riding his bicycle eastbound on Alma Ave. at the intersection with Second Ave., when a vehicle pulled up and someone from the vehicle asked Ramirez what gang he claimed. It is unknown if Ramirez answered but a passenger from the vehicle began shooting at Ramirez. Ramirez was struck, along with a couple of vehicles parked on the street. The suspect vehicle, described as a dark colored mid-sized SUV, was last seen fleeing eastbound on Alma Ave. Witnesses were unable to provide a suspect description. This homicide is the seventh in the City of Salinas this year and is being investigated as gang related.
